  1. Welcome to Co-op! • All forms handed out today must be signed and returned tomorrow.

  2. In the Community • Be respectful and responsible • Be organized and follow directions • Be on time • Be prepared, clarify instructions • Maintain proper attendance

  3. Course Calendar • You will be presented with a 5-month calendar. All important dates for the semester are outlined on the calendar.

  4. Course Set Up • 3 hours/day – If you miss work, you must make up the time. You must have at least 190 placement hours. This means 220 hours in total including class hours. • Your teacher keeps track of in-class hours separately. In-class hours do not count on log sheets.

  5. Course Set Up Continued • Log sheets and reflections • You must complete log sheets in detail. These are available on the website. • The reflection questions must also be completed.

  6. Course Set Up Continued • Integration Days • Assignments will be completed in class. You are responsible for catching up on missed assignments. • The assignments will be available on the Co-op web page • You must attend Integration Days

  7. Course Set Up Continued • Summative Project • There will be a project to complete. You will not have an exam in this course. We will work on parts of the project on Integration Days.

  8. Course Set Up Continued • Employer Evaluations • There are three over the semester. Make sure you give these to the employer in advance.

  9. EMPLOYER EXPECTATIONS • BE THERE, BE THERE ON TIME • Positive attitude • Ready, willing and able to work hard • Follow instructions well • Ask questions if you are unsure of instructions • Co-operate with co-workers • Say hello when you arrive • Say goodbye when you leave

THERE IS MORE TO CO-OP THAN WORKING ON THE JOBSITE • Make sure all assignments are handed in • Make sure you continue to communicate with your co-op teacher • Make sure you communicate with your employer/supervisor • Make sure you report any accidents to your supervisor and teacher immediately • If you are away you must call both your employer and your teacher. • You must attend integration days.

  11. Employability Skills – Personal Management Skills At your co-op placement • Demonstrate a positive attitude • Show Initiative • Be honest • Demonstrate good personal ethics • Be responsible • Work Safely

  12. Employability Skills – Teamwork Skills At your co-op placement • Respect the thoughts and opinions of others • Understand and contribute to the organization’s goals • Participate in projects and tasks • Do what you say you are going to do

Employability Skills – Personal Management Skills At your co-op placement demonstrate • Good work habits • Clean up after yourself • No smoking on the jobsite • No rude or abusive language • Treat everyone with respect! • Do the best job you can • Apologize and explain an error if you happen to make one – do not hide it!

  14. REMEMBER: • If you are going to be late or absent from your placement you MUST: • Call your employer (each day if more than one) • Make a note of your employer’s number • Call your teacher (every day, even if you are away more than one day)

DRESS CODE • Make sure you are clean, neat and tidy • Practice proper hygiene • Bath or shower, wash every day • Clean hair and teeth • Use deodorant • Be aware of perfume free environments • Consider what body parts are showing *Remember you are in a place of business … What you wear and say are of utmost importance

  17. Confidentiality • What you hear and see at the workplace stays at the workplace • Why is confidentiality important? • Confidentiality Agreement – part of your co-op contract

  18. YOU’RE FIRED!!! How do you get fired from co-op?

  19. IF YOU GET FIRED …. • You will lose your co-operative education credits. • Speak to your teacher before this happens if there is a problem at your placement. • Communication needs to be open at all times.

  20. Apprenticeship Careers • Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program • Trades training – links workplace training with classroom learning • You can start your apprenticeship in your co-op placement. Your teacher will help you fill in an OYAP initial registration if this is what you want to do.
