  5. Components of MSU’s WCTP • Pre-Candidacy Program – one Saturday per month from January through May • Summer Standards Prep Course – 4 days, June or July • Mentoring Program – September through May

  6. National Board for Professional Teaching Standards • Created in 1987 as a nonpartisan, independent, and nonprofit organization. • Mission - establish high and rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do, develop and operate a national voluntary system to assess and certify teachers who meet these standards, and to advance related education reforms for the purpose of improving student learning. • Consists of over 50% teachers.

Five Core Propositions • Teachers are committed to students and their learning. • Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students. • Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning. • Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience. • Teachers are members of learning communities.

  8. Proposition 1 – key points • All students can learn • Students come from differing backgrounds • Assess each student • All types of learners • Deep understanding of child to tailor instruction – academic, social, etc .

  9. Proposition 2 – key points • Expose students to critical thinking • Questioning • Know your students • Know your subject area • Generate multiple paths of learning • Know value of discovery learning • How to convey your subject matter to students

Proposition 3 – key points • Multiple methods to meet goals • Seek expertise and knowledge from colleagues • Managing learning in group settings in different ways • Motivate student learning and engage in activities • Monitoring and assessing student progress – plan for individual students as well as whole class • Clearly articulate goals for students

  11. Proposition 4 – key points • Make difficult choices, even in no-win situations • Get advice from colleagues • Continually looking for ways to gain more knowledge on subject matter

  13. The Architecture of Accomplished Teaching: What is underneath the surface? Set new high and worthwhile goals that are appropriate for these students at this time. Reflect on student learning, the effectiveness of the instructional design, particular concerns and issues. Evaluate student learning in light of the goals and the instruction. Implement instruction designed to attain those goals. Set high, worthwhile goals appropriate for these students, at this time, in this setting. FIRST: Assessment of the Students – Who are they? Where are they now? What do they need and in what order do they need it? Where should I begin?

  14. What is National Board Certification? • Teachers provide evidence of how they met the high and rigorous standards • National Board Certification assessment is comprised of two components: • I. A school-site portfolio • II. Exercises at assessment center

  17. National Board Certification ASSESSMENT CENTER EXERCISES • Focus on subject knowledge • Age and content-appropriate teaching strategies used • Candidates complete six exercises – 30 minutes each

Research Confirms National Board Certification Recognizes Accomplished Teaching The University of North Carolina - Greensboro Validation Study found that: • NBCTs significantly outperform their peers in 11 out of 13 key dimensions of expert teaching practice. • Work samples from students of NBCTs reflected a deeper understanding of the concepts taught (when compared to students of teachers who sought but hadn’t achieved National Board Certification)
