  2. East Guilford High School

  3. Central Atrium Community Environment: Eastern Guilford High School is in a fast-growing rural community located outside of Greensboro, North Carolina. The student body is one of the most diverse in the district. The residents and alumni are very involved in the school and the building truly serves as the centerpiece of its community.

  4. Central Atrium Community Environment: continued The loss of the existing school due to fire was devastating to the students and community. As a result, the project requirements for temporary facilities and rapid replacement become primary project objectives. In the end, the schedules were met and over 1,200 people attended the building dedication. The community has rallied around its new school and is proudly sending a new generation of students forward.

  5. Science Classroom Learning Environment: The learning environment is engaging and supports students understanding of the relevance of their education. Students and teachers appreciate the learning environment because it makes them feel special. The principal describes the learning environment as being very academic. Teachers like the projectors, smart boards, and especially the sound reinforcement system.

  6. General Classroom Learning Environment: The principal says that the glass from the corridor into the classrooms serves several purposes. It extends the daylight from the classroom into the corridor. The glass allows for better supervision of the corridors and lastly the glass allows teachers to hold each other accountable. Teacher’s offices, community spaces and project labs are seen as an extension of the learning environment which serve to further engage students.

  7. View of Atrium from Stairs Physical Environment : This daylit building is warm, inviting and open feeling. The building draws students in and immerses them in their education. The central atrium, cyber café and career center engage and captivate students. The spaces are used for a variety of activities and new and exciting uses for these spaces are being discovered every day. They function as the central gathering spaces of the school and the hub for daily activities. They are also used for “club day” events, multi-cultural events, athletic and cheerleading events and other miscellaneous events.

  8. Exterior at Dusk Physical Environment Ultimately, they reinforce and underscore the educational commitment and access to technology and independent study so critical to contemporary learning.

  9. Entrance at Dusk Planning Process: How fast can you replace a high school? The initial project structure was contemplated as a re-use of Northern Guilford HS, which was a high school under construction in the county at the time of the fire. Once the design team met with the owner’s project team it was apparent that curriculum and community differences needed for Eastern Guilford HS to have it’s own identity.

  10. View of Atrium from Second Level Planning Process: The owner’s project team was made up of school staff, district administrators, students, and members of the Eastern Guilford community. The process was fast-paced and the team worked quickly to determine how and what students would be taught and the vision of the appropriate educational environment for the school. The focus of the project team was providing a building that would keep students engaged in and help them to see the relevance of their education. This focus resulted in an exciting building that serves as the center of activities in the Eastern Guilford Community.
