A Little History • Pre-1990–“We counted the equipment out ….” • 1990 onwards– EPA Grades and Zones and…. % of sites of a satisfactory or better standard • LEQSE– Grades, intermediary grades & land uses • BV 199– LAs closely involved • BV 199 a-d– litter, detritus, graffiti & fly-posting • NI 195– even greater LA input, but still Government limitations, such as a single number & separate NI 196

  4. NI195 The Current System • 900 Total Transects • Split into three, four month periods of 300 transects • 30 transect minimum per land use • 4Elements • Litter • Detritus • Graffiti • Fly-Posting • 10 Land Uses

  13. Grading Definition Not individually Defined √ Grade A : None of element Grade B : Predominantly free Grade C : Widespread distribution minor accumulations Grade D : Heavily littered significant accumulations ….. Grade B+ ….. Grade B- ….. Grade C- x

Additional Element – Weeds (definition) Weed growth is defined as any plant that is growing in a location where it is not intended, including where plants or grass are encroaching on paved areas in an unplanned way - usually by means of colonising accumulations of detritus or along cracks and joints in paving

Grading Weeds Grade A The transect is completely free from weeds or moss Grade B Small shoots of weed growth are visible in joints and along margin of paved areas, but are so small as not to entrap litter or prevent its removal through normal cleansing operations Grade C Significant weed growth is present in the transect to the extent that litter and detritus has been or could be, entrapped in the vegetation. Moss growth will be clearly visible - some raised forms - usually on the margins of paved areas Grade D There is extensive weed or moss growth which covers a significant part of the transect. It is unlikely that the litter and detritus entrapped by the vegetation can be removed using normal cleansing methods

  17. Survey Sample Frameworks NI 195 Style Split the list into 5 equal groups (quintiles) Set which wards to select in each tranche The wards are split up to get different levels of IMD within each quintile

  18. Sampling Framework – The Area • Choose an area • Neighbourhood Zones • Areas identified from wider surveys: • Any survey can be split into sub areas (land uses / neighbourhood areas / fronts vs. backs / cobbled vs. paved) • Identify the amount of survey sites available
