  3. Tasks of BZVD Maintenance of local network & equipment Education The BZVD as a service centre of DFN User consulting Application searches& tests Providing video conferences(as a service)

  4. User Poll Use of Video Conferencing 13% not planned 30% short-term 57% already used Frequency: Up to 15 conferences per month Average duration: Up to 1 hour Main technology: MBone, H.323 October 1999

  5. Purpose of BZVD • Support of the DFN community with planning, installation and use of video conference services • Video conferencing as a regular service in the WiN • Co-operation with other projects of the DFN • Knowledge transfer between local partners in the WiN • Efforts and benefits  synergy effects

  6. User Consulting and Demonstrations • Introduction to standard users: • Opportunities and limitations of video conferencing • Hardware and software look-and-feel • Recommendation: H.323 or MBone tools • Users with special demands: • Help on selecting hardware and software • Supporting with first steps • H.323 and MBone tools and others • ATM, ISDN (H.320), gateway solutions

  7. Providing Video Conferences • Support for users with our equipment: • during usage mobile BZVD communication equipment • (e.g. broadcasts of conferences / meetings) • Provide a stationary video conferencing room for groups • Usage: • Ohio State University, Columbus • Demonstration for TIB e.V.(Technology & Innovations Consulting for Employees, Hamburg) • Tests in co-operation with the Max Planck Society • etc.

  8. Network of Competence • Partners  Network of local competences in the WiN • Contacts with app. 20 organisations and institutions • 8 different computer centres in Niedersachsen and 6 other research institutionsin Germany • Deutscher Wetterdienst, Virtuelles Theater Bochum, Europa Universität Frankfurt/Oder and other • (With single institutions at the moment, no network yet) • contacts are presently rather bilateral, not yet interlinked

  9. MCU Service of DFN • Application scenarios: • Directors, managers • Scientists • Demands: • Reliable and unbureaucratic management of the MCU • Reservation tool for the MCU with direct users access • Video quality: at least 384 kbps • Audio quality: G.722 • T.120 for application sharing • Continuous presence: display of the last 4-5 participants • Display of names of the participants of a conference • Reliable service, hotline, FAQs • Automation of the service: directory, configuration, billing, monitoring, gatekeeper (centralised / distributed)

  10. MCU Service of DFN • Development tasks • DFN • Provision of a reservation system • Installation of components • Installation of a monitoring system • Installation of a service administration • Recommendations for end systems / clients • User • Installation of a gatekeeper (if necessary an MCU) • Time scheduling • Start piloting in summer 2001 with restricted functionality (lack of reservation system) • and limited number of users

  11. Tests of H.323 Devices • Purpose: MCU services by DFN in WiNTerminals: end devices • Polyspan: Viewstation 128, Viewstation 512, ViaVideoSony: Contact 1600Tandberg: 1000VCON: Escort 25, Crusier 384, MC 8000, Falcon IP, ViGO ProIntel: Proshare 500, TeamStationElsa Vision II, NetMeeting 3.01, SunForum 3.1 & 3.0 • MCUs: multi control unit for group conferences • FVC: Click To MeetACCORD: MGC 100RADVision: MCU-323ezenia!: encounter 1000 NetServer • reliable, in active development, no further development, instable

  12. Tests of H.323 MCUs • MCUs: multipoint control units for H.323 • FVC: Click To Meet ACCORD: MGC 100 RADVision: MCU-323

  13. Tests of H.323 MCU‘s • FVC: Click To Meet (Demo Version) • Usage and registeration is done by the members • Closed groups with up to 15 users, small conferences with 4 users • Scheduled or ad-hoc Conferences, browser-based • ACCORD: MGC 100 • Administrator permanently needed, registration of users required • Large, closed groups, large conferences possible • Administrator starts conference • Unique functions: video splitting modes, speed matching • RADVision: MCU-323 • Usage by users themselves, no registration required • Medium-sized of conferences • Conferences start with dialing from terminal • Audio problems with NetMeeting

  14. Results of Tests • Group conferences with more than 4 terminals: difficult • Every participant with bad audio equipment cause disturbances • Video coding without special hardware is not optimal • Video display on TV - best solution, but expensive • Compatibility issues between certain H.323 devices • Gatekeeper is part of the systemconcept for the WiN • Quality of G-WiN satisfies the needs • Local problems occur sometimes • MCU: highest requirements in the network

  15. Compatibility Matrix for H.323 [2] http://bzvd.urz.tu-dresden.de/vc-systeme/matrix/

  16. Accessories

  17. Video Conference Address Book • List of video conference users • Users create and change entries individually • Listing of the entries is generally accessible [3] http://bzvd.urz.tu-dresden.de/adressen/adr.php

  18. Information of BZVD • Information available in German only [1]: • Audio / video: signals, connectors, codings • Room equipment and design • Video conference hardware & software: • Chosen products, own tests • Long list of manufacturers, distributors, services • MBone software archives • Poster: audio, video, MBone [4] • MBone Manual • PC hardware: audio / video cards • Notebook for video conferences • English translation of unique information upon request (compatibility matrix)

  19. To Do • H.323 over Firewall • Gatekeeper • QoS
