  1. Math and Science Team Parent Information Oct 2012

  2. What is MST? Math and Science Team (MST) is an opportunity for students who excel in math and science to compete in TMSCA competitions.

  3. This year, we will be focusing on general math and general science in our practice sessions.

  4. General Math • General Math, a 40-minute, 60 question multiple choice test which covers concepts from pre-algebra to calculus Scoring is 5 points for each correct answer and -2 points (2 points deducted) for each wrong answer; the maximum score is 360 points. Skipped questions and unanswered questions are unscored and do not add or deduct points. • Calculators are not allowed on this test.

  5. General Science • Science: For middle school 40 minutes are given to complete the test. After 20 minutes, however, any competitors who are done may leave. The test is 50 questions and covers biology, chemistry, and physics.

  6. Number sense and Calculator are other tests your student can practice for on their own with the materials we post on edmodo.

  7. Number Sense • Number Sense – a 10-minute, 80 question, mental math test (no calculators or scratch paper are allowed). Students must work the problems in order as printed on the test; if a problem is skipped, it is scored as a wrong answer. Scoring is 5 points for each correct answer and -4 points (4 points deducted) for each wrong answer or skipped question. • Grading is very strict on answers only. No scratch work or stray marks anywhere on the paper. Handwriting must be perfect.

  8. Calculator • Calculator Applications, a 30-minute, 80 question test in which contestants evaluate mathematical expressions using scientific or graphing calculators. Scoring is 5 points for each correct answer, -4 points (4 points deducted) for each wrong answer or skipped question. • At the competition, we will be bringing calculators (TI – 84 plus) for students to use if they do not have their own. • Grading is very particular in how the answers are written.

  9. When do we practice?

  10. practices • Practices are open for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders that plan to compete in TMSCA competitions. • All practices are held on Thursdays before school from 6:45 – 7:15am in the Orange and Green computer labs. Upcoming practices: • October 18 & 25 • November 1, 8, & 29 • Dec 6 • Practice materials will be posted on the Edmodo website. • If we learn of any other competitions to attend, we will inform students at our meetings as well as on Edmodo.

  11. When are the competitions?

  12. TMSCA competitions • All competitions are on Saturdays. • We do not attend all of the competitions as a whole group. • As a group, we plan to attend a competition in January, and the first state qualifier at the Village School on Feb 23rd. • We also plan to attend the state competition in San Antonio in April. At this point, we are unsure of the transportation to the competition.

  13. TMSCA competitions 2013: • Jan 19     TMSCA #8 - ? • Jan 26     TMSCA #9--Dulles • Feb 9       TMSCA #10--Elkins • Feb 16     TMSCA #11 - ? • Feb 23     TMSCA #12--Village School (state qualifier) • Mar 2       TMSCA #13--Doerre (state qualifier) • Mar 9 TMSCA #14--Quail Valley (state qualifier) • April ?    TMSCA State Meet in San Antonio

  14. TMSCA competitions • We have not received registration information for upcoming competitions. • When the registration information is received, we will post it on Edmodo and share it with students at our morning practice meetings.

  15. We expect the cost and times to be similar to years past Tournament Cost: __________ (Make your check payable to Dulles High School) Transportation Cost: $10 (make your check payable to BDJH)

  16. More information

  17. Communication • Edmodo is an educational site that we are going to use to communicate with MST members and parents • Students will receive the code to join the MST Edmodo site at our first morning practice on October 18th.

  18. Additional opportunities

  19. Additional opportunity: AMC 8 • The AMC 8 is a 25 question, 40 minute multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem solving skills. This school year it will be held Tuesday, November 13, 2012. • The examination provides an opportunity to apply the concepts taught at the junior high level to problems which not only range from easy to difficult but also cover a wide range of applications. Many problems are designed to challenge students and to offer problem solving experiences beyond those provided in most junior high school mathematics classes. Calculators are not allowed starting in 2008. High scoring students are invited to participate in the AMC 10. • We hope to also hold AMC 10 at BDJH in Feb 2012 for those students that are interested.
