Place Value Wheels • In third grade, students need to know place value to the thousands place. • The next page has a three digit place-value wheel. Give students various prompts, such as: • Numbers written in word form • Numbers written in expanded form • Show the number that is “10 more” or “100 more” than a given number • When you want to introduce thousands, put two place value wheels side-to-side. You can remove wheels to the left of the thousands place. • It’s good for students to see the digits in “periods.” Period is the word used to describe the three digits separated by columns.
