  1. Summarizing 101

  2. What do we mean by summarizing? • To effectively summarize, students must delete some things, substitute some things, and keep some things and then write in their own words about what they have read, seen or heard.

  3. Why is summarizing so powerful? To effectively delete, substitute, and keep information, students must analyze the information at a fairly deep level.

  4. Being aware of the explicit structure of information is an aid to summarizing information Beginning Middle End

  5. Rule-Based Strategy for Summarizing: • Delete trivial material that is unnecessary to understanding. • Delete redundant material. • Substitute broad terms for lists (e.g. “flowers” for “daisies, tulips, and roses”). • Select a topic sentence or invent one. • Rewrite the paragraph.

  6. For Example…

  7. “Parents make a positive difference when they join teachers and administrators in the effort to reduce cheating and plagiarism. It is especially important that they support the school when their child has been proved guilty of cheating or plagiarizing. Some parents demand that the incident be ignored despite the evidence or even threaten to sue the school. This sends the student a message that the parents support dishonest behavior. Ethical parents accept an appropriate penalty and help the student use the experience as an opportunity for moral growth.” Lathrop, Ann and Kathleen Foss. Student Cheating and Plagiarism in the Internet Era: A Wake-Up Call. Englewood, Colorado: Libraries Unlimited, 2000. p. 5
