  1. Introduction to annotation

  2. annotation • The act or process of furnishing critical commentary or explanatory notes. • A critical or explanatory note; a commentary.

  3. Why annotate??? • To catalogue support for class discussion and future writing assignments. • To organize questions, key facts, ideas about a text. • To take note of important textual details in preparation for future quizzes/tests. • To ensure your active reading of a text. • TO IMPROVE YOUR COMPREHENSION OF A COMPLEX TEXT!!!

  4. What to annotate??? • Crucial elements of the text….NOT THE ENTIRE TEXT!!!

  5. More specifically… • ***Every reading assignment will include a SPECIFIC annotation focus/READING PURPOSE!!! • Questions • Connections • Summary • Predictions • Significant Quotes • Themes/Thematic Concepts • Symbols • Character Development

  6. What should it look like??? • There is a SPECIFIC COMBINATION of ideas you must create for every annotation you make… • MARKING IN THE TEXT + NOTE IN THE MARGIN

  7. FOR EXAMPLE… • It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him. This dark imagery helps to create an ominous, mysterious, (somewhat) depressing mood.

  8. How many do you need??? • Your annotations must display… • Complexity of Thought • Consistency of Thought
