  1. DeltaStream - A Tidal Stream Energy Deviceby Tidal Energy Ltd. A presentation for The Buzz Coastal Challenge Day 9th October 2012

  2. What is Tidal Energy? Tidal energy is a predictable form of hydro-power that converts the energy of the tides into electricity or other useful forms of power. Photo courtesy of Malcolm Barradell

  3. Best UK ‘Tidal Stream’ Sites Tidal Stream isthe movement of water as the tide ebbs and floods. Tidal stream renewable energy devices use energy from the tidal current, just as wind turbines use energy from the movement of the air. Sea currents are stronger where water is forced to flow through narrow channels or around headlands. There are many locations around the UK coastline where tidal stream resources are high, and it is in these areas where technology developers like TEL are exploring this type of energy. 4. DeltaStream - Tidal Stream Energy Device TEL’s DeltaStream device was invented by Richard Ayre, a local Marine Engineer who lives in Pembrokeshire (pictured right). The Welsh Government and Pembrokeshire Coast National Park sponsored very early trials in the Cleddau Estuary in 2002 (right). TEL’s full-scale DeltaStream device will be installed in Ramsey Sound in 2013 for a 1 year test trial.

  5. DeltaStream Technology DeltaStream will generate 1.2 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 1,000 homes. DeltaStream sits on the seabed without being anchored. DeltaStream has 3 turbines mounted on a triangle-shaped frameand will almost be the size of an Olympic-sized swimming pool. DeltaStream has a low centre of gravity allowing stability, and avoiding overturning and sliding. Each turbine’s nacelle (engine) can turn to face the oncoming tide and generate electricity on both the ebb and flood tides.

  6. Test Site – Ramsey Sound1 Year Demonstration TEL has leased the seabed at Ramsey Sound from The Crown Estate (the seabed is owned by The Queen). TEL started work onshore at St Justinian’s earlier this year, so we can connect the DeltaStream to the electricity grid when it goes in the water in 2013. TEL had to complete important environmental surveys before being allowed to test the DeltaStream device at Ramsey Sound. The environment will continue to be monitored during the 1 Year test trial using special equipment.

  7. Environmental Impact Assessment • TEL’s environmental surveys included: • The impact on Mammals, Fish and Diving Birds • The impact on Fisheries • The impact on The Seabed • The impact on Shipping and Navigation • The impact of any Oil Contamination • Onshore Grid Connection • Noise Issues • The impact on Tourism and • Recreation
