Gov’t Involvement in Int’l Trade • Balance of Trade – A nations difference in value between exports and imports • Positive Balance – “Trade Surplus,” when exports > imports • Negative Balance – “Trade Deficit,” when imports > exports Obj: Categorize trade barriers in the US by researching trade barriers and documenting them as Tariffs, Quotas, or Embargoes, after a teacher-lead discussion on trade barriers.

Gov’t Involvement in Int’l Trade • Tariff’s (duty) – tax on imports • Revenue-producing Tariff’s – used as a primary source of income before taxes were established • Protective Tariff’s – Increase the price of imported goods so that domestic products can compete with them.
