  1. Convection Currents • The transfer of heat through movement of a gas or liquid

  2. WHY ARE TEMPERATURES DIFFERENT AROUND THE WORLD? • Why is it hot near the equator and cold near the poles?

  3. How does Temperature Create Movement? • Air/Water/Magma likes to be where it’s warm because there is LESS pressure • Air/Water/Magma are constantly moving toward warmer temperatures

  4. How does Temperature Create Movement? • Global winds blow because sunlight heats areas near Earth’s equator more than it heats the poles. • The air near the poles is cooler, denser, and has higher pressure than the air near the equator. • These differences cause warm are near the equator to rise and cool air from the poles to move in to take its place.

  5. How does Temperature Create Movement? • Air/Water/Magma likes to be where it’s warm because there is LESS pressure • Air/Water/Magma are constantly moving toward warmer temperatures

  6. How does Temperature Create Movement? • During daytime, when there is sunshine, the land heats up more quickly than the sea. Above the land, warm air rises and cooler air moves in to take its place. Wind blows toward the coast.

  7. How does Temperature Create Movement? • At night, the land cools down more quickly while the sea stays warm. Above the sea, warm air rises and cooler air moves in to take its place. Wind blows away from the coast.

  8. How does Temperature Create Movement? • Air/Water/Magma likes to be where it’s warm because there is LESS pressure • Air/Water/Magma are constantly moving toward warmer temperatures

  9. How does Temperature Create Movement? • Air/Water/Magma likes to be where it’s warm because there is LESS pressure • Air/Water/Magma are constantly moving toward warmer temperatures

  10. How does Temperature Create Movement? • Air/Water/Magma likes to be where it’s warm because there is LESS pressure • Air/Water/Magma are constantly moving toward warmer temperatures

  11. Convection Currents • What causes convection currents? Explain. • How do convection currents influence the Earth and weather? Essential Question
