New Media/Technology Story Telling: Using Vogler’s Archetypes in Modern Media • Christopher Vogler, native to St Louis Missouri received his BA in Journalism at the University of Missouri in 1971. • After Serving in the U.S. Air force making documentaries for the Government, he eventually attended film school at the University of Southern California. • As a Film student, reading Joseph Campbell’s book The Hero with a Thousand Faces, Vogler was inspired to form the theories we I am using today from his book, The Writers Journey.   7. Original Concepts and Prototypes Research and Conceptualizing 7 archetypes Origin: Often have Humble Beginnings (the orphan). Teaches early value of family and community. Looking outside to in creates empathy. Usually begin without access to any distinguishing abilities. Weapon: The Sword, Pistol, Sword and Shield, The generic weapon of the world they live in. Token: Often in the cases of Orphans, something that reminds them of the family they have lost. Clothes: Humble in the beginning (relation to the reader - average person), Glorious in the end implying the readers potential as well. Ethos: Stereotypically Lawful/Good but really any branch of the “Good” perspective. Personality: Humility developed throughout the story to make him or her a better person morally. Gift/Talent: Focusing on Fantasy, normally it is a magical command of the natural elements. • The Hero’s Seven Themes
