Jay Sawyer of Northbrook Shares Why He Feels MLB Should Keep Designated Hitters

Jay Sawyer of Northbrook strongly believes that keeping the DH rule and adding it to the National League is likely to make MLB more entertaining. He notes that since most of the pitchers are below average batters, using a DH increases offense, which the statistics have long proven. Hence, keeping the DH in the American League and expanding it to the National League is likely to increase the number of good hitters at bat. This would eventually make MLB more interesting for fans, especially during World Series.

  1. Jay Sawyer of Northbrook Shares Why He Feels MLB Should Keep Designated Hitters Over the years, the difference in the DH rules between the American League (where the DH was adopted) and the National League (where it was not practiced until last year) resulted in a different style of the game in both leagues. While the American League baseball is more offense-oriented whose main strategy is to get runners on base and then have a batter hit a three-run home run; the focus of National League baseball, on the other hand, isn’t on home runs but on pitching and speed. The difference, according to Jay Sawyer of Northbrook is great and gives each league separate and unique identities. Jay Sawyer of Northbrook highlights what LA Angels general manager Billy Eppler once said to ESPN: “The qualities of each league are part of that (baseball) character.” It will be fascinating for fans to see whether the existence of DH in both the leagues will add to or minimize the difference between them – an additional intrigue to keep fans’ attention.

  2. Sawyer strongly believes that keeping the DH rule and adding it to the National League is likely to make MLB more entertaining. He notes that since most of the pitchers are below average batters, using a DH increases offense, which the statistics have long proven. Jay Sawyer of Northbrook also notes that defense is crucial when it comes to winning baseball games, and pitching is a significant aspect of defense. That being said, without offense, no baseball team can win games. Most fans enjoy watching baseball hitters score more than defense plays, and in fact, for many, offensive games can be more exciting to watch. Hence, keeping the DH in the American League and expanding it to the National League is likely to increase the number of good hitters at bat. This would eventually make MLB more interesting for fans, especially during World Series.
