Jay Sawyer of Glenview, IL Talks About His Observations of Trucking Industry

Jay Sawyer of Glenview, IL has been following the trucking industry for quite some time now, trying to understand the reason behind massive truck-driver shortage. Even though it is an $80,000 job with the median trucker salary being $42,000, a lot of firms are still struggling to recruit new truck drivers. The reason, in Jayu2019s opinion is, the driver salaries are as much as 50% lower than what they were in the 1970s. He feels that introduction of self-driving cars would phase out around 1.8 million truck-driving jobs and save the industry an estimated $300 billion. Jay Sawyer of Glenview, IL feels autonomous vehicles would save the trucking industry billions and increase fuel efficiency.

  1. Jay Sawyer of Glenview, IL Talks About His Observations of Trucking Industry

  2. Jay’s Opinion on Truck-Driver Shortage • Jay Sawyer of Glenview, IL has been following the trucking industry for quite some time now, trying to understand the reason behind massive truck-driver shortage. • Even though it is an $80,000 job with the median trucker salary being $42,000, a lot of firms are still struggling to recruit new truck drivers. • The reason, in Jay’s opinion is, the driver salaries are as much as 50% lower than what they were in the 1970s.

  3. The Future of Self-Driving Cars • Jay is often asked if America's truck drivers are all going to be unemployed pretty soon as autonomous technology renders their jobs redundant. • He is quite confident that self-driving trucks will become the norm as early as in the next decade. • He feels that introduction of self-driving cars would phase out around 1.8 million truck-driving jobs and save the industry an estimated $300 billion.

  4. Some Statistics around Truck Drivers • Jay Sawyer of Glenview, IL believes that introduction of self-driving cars can be a massive issue for truck drivers. • The federal government has estimated that there are 1.8 million heavy-duty truck drivers in the US, though the American Trucking Associations estimated there are as many as 3.5 million. • The average driver is about 55 years of age, which basically leaves out the possibility for retraining.

  5. Benefits of Autonomous Vehicles • Jay Sawyer of Glenview, ILfeels autonomous vehicles would save the trucking industry billions and increase fuel efficiency. • According to a Morgan Stanley report, labor savings alone would cut costs $70 billion per year, and productivity would be up 30% because driverless trucks would run 24/7. • He won’t be surprised if robots replace as many as 800 million workers by 2030 considering they've already displaced key blue-collar jobs across the US.
