5 Best Examples of Volcanic Ash Effects in Movies
Volcanic eruptions, complete with volcanic ash and flowing lava, are a classic feature of many natural disaster movies and tv series. But not all onscreen eruptions get it right; some come across as more dubious than disastrous. Poor acting aside, nothing ruins a good disaster movie more than bad special effects. Luckily, not all eruptions fizzled; here are five examples of volcanic effects that were bang-on.
Dante’s Peak (1997) This movie itself is hit or miss depending on who you ask, but one thing that is indisputable is that the volcanic ash effects are widely entertaining and highly believable. Dante’s peak has one of the best volcano eruption scenes ever filmed, and the volcanic ash throughout the film is so well done we can forgive some of the more improbable aspects of the story.
Volcano (1997) 1997 produced two volcano-centred blockbusters. Dante’s peaks and Volcano. While Dante’s Peak features some scientifically unlikely events, Volcano seemingly abandons science altogether. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t an extraordinarily entertaining and visually impressive film. The eruption and volcanic ash effects in Volcano are worth a watch alone.
Pompeii (2014) Pompeii depicts the story of one of the most famous volcanic eruptions of all time, Mount Vesuvius, in 79 AD. We’ve probably all seen archeological remnants of what was left of the city of the Roman city of Pompeii, and this movie does a good job of telling the story through a somewhat overdone romance. But where the film really shines is in its visual effects, and the use of volcanic ash will not disappoint. Pompeii is a decent story and worth watching for Kit Harrington and crazy volcanic ash effects alone.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) Say what you will about Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (and the critics did not hold back) its use of an erupting volcano as the backdrop to the film was nonetheless very impressive. Lava, volcanic ash, and active debris make this movie entertaining and, if not overly plausible, at least fun to watch.
Supervolcano (2005) Despite the fact that Supervolcano was a made-for-tv movie without the massive budget of some of the other features on this list, it is a surprisingly good volcano disaster flick with believable eruption and volcanic ash effects.
