  1. Math Curriculum • Number sense 0.01-99,999 • Whole number computation • Multiplication and division of multi-digit numbers • Non-negative rational numbers • Perimeter and area • Length, time, capacity, and mass • Transformations • Symmetry and congruence • Line graphs • Coordinate grids • Median, mode, and range • Circle graphs • Variables in number sentences • Permutations and combinations • Proportional reasoning • Students will solve relevant and authentic problems using appropriate technology and apply these concepts as well as those developed in earlier years. • We are moving to Common Core Standards in math. This is our transition year. W e will be teaching both Common Core and NCSCOS. • Link to Common Core Math: http://www.corestandards.org/assets/CCSSI_Math%20Standards.pdf

  2. Technology Curriculum • http://www.ncpublicschools.org/docs/acre/standards/new-standards/info-technology/gradek.pdf

  3. Social Studies Curriculum • http://www.ncpublicschools.org/docs/acre/standards/new-standards/social-studies/3-5.pdf

  4. Science Curriculum • http://www.ncpublicschools.org/docs/acre/standards/new-standards/science/3-5.pdf

  5. Language Arts Curriculum • Apply strategies (graphophonic, syntactic, and semantic) when encountering unknown words. • Use word reference materials. • Develop metacognitive strategies to comprehend text that is read, heard and viewed. • Read a variety of texts (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, etc.). • Make connections with text by analyzing author’s word choice, characters’ motives, and plots. • Create oral, written and visual texts. • Apply grammar and language conventions to communicate effectively. • As with Math, we are in a transition year in Language Arts. http://www.corestandards.org/assets/CCSSI_ELA%20Standards.pdf

  6. Homework Procedures • Each Monday (or on the first day of the school week), your child will get a homework packet. • Homework isgraded. • Since homework counts for a percentage of their grade, they don’t want to fall behind in missing assignments.

  7. Spelling • Each week for homework, your child will get a list of 10 (more later in the year) spelling words. For homework, they will have a daily assignment related to the “types” of words they have. • The words given on Friday will be DIFFERENT words than they got on Monday. The words will follow the same spelling patterns as the words on the list. • Words can be found at www.spellingcity.com . Students can practice their words on the site as well as play games with them.

  8. Projects Each quarter (probably), your child will be working on a BIG 6 research project. Some of the work will be done at school and some will have to be worked on at home. Projects will always come with a rubric that has been discussed with your child, so they know exactly how they will be graded and when all parts of the project are due.
