  1. Technology and Education A personal timeline of educational technology ETEC 442 Spring 2011

  2. Overview My name is Roxy Ragsdale I started school in 1993 in Lahaina, Maui. I graduated from high school in 2006 from Kamehameha Schools Maui Campus I first went to college at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2006. When I finish my degree, I hope to become a high school art teacher.

  3. My definition of educational technology • … is the use of technological tools such as computers, Smart Boards, iPads, etc., and their application to the learning and teaching process in schools.

  4. Web sites on ed tech history • Slideshow of History of Eductational Technology • History of Technology in Classroom • Time of Learning Devices

  5. Kindergarten technology • I remember my elementary school having a computer lab where we went maybe once a week and used KidPix! • The computers were Macintosh • There were no computers in any other classrooms

  6. High school technology • Each student was given a Dell laptop when they entered 9th grade • Students only had to turn in laptops during the summer so the school could update all the software, otherwise laptop was in students possession 24/7 • Teachers had Smart Boards in their classrooms along with whiteboards, no chalkboards • Every teacher also had a laptop • Every student was required to take computer technology classes from 9th to 11th grade • Most students had iPods and teachers sometimes allowed them in classes • Most class projects required making Power Points or Excel spreadsheets • Computers came with graphing software for math classes like calculus

  7. College technology • Undergrad: • Dell laptop • mostly used my computer to do research and write papers, not many of my classes used Laulima or required any work done on the computer • Some on-line quizzes • MyUH portal: grades, registering for classes, emailing teachers • Grad years: • new MacBook Pro (opened up a whole new world!) • most homework turned in on-line (through Laulima or email) • Lots of discussions using a variety of methods (Laulima, Ning, Facebook) • Notes are posted on-line • WAY more time required to spend on the computer

  8. A vivid technology learning experience • Easy worldwide communication and networking • Skype, blogs, Facebook, etc.. • Phones and smaller devices with the internet like the iPad • Access to the internet anywhere and everywhere in the “palm of your hand”

  9. A technology I want to use in my classroom • I would love for all my students to have access to a laptop with Adobe Photoshop software already installed so that they can easily upload, alter, and print their digital images.

  10. My vision of the classroom of the future • I can imagine every student having their own personal laptops with the newest and best software in school. All schools will have wireless internet so that students can access the internet anywhere on campus. Instead of turning in papers or using textbooks, everything will be done on these laptops turned in through email or sites like laulima.

  11. A challenge for teaching There are a few challenges I see in using technology in my classroom… • Improper use by students • Facebook, chatting, twitter, texting • Malfunctioning of technology! • Computers breaking, viruses, etc… • Keeping up with the rapid increase of new technology

  12. Words of wisdom • “Education is a social process. Education is growth. Education is not a preparation for life; education is life itself.” • - John Dewey
