  2. General Information • Drafted in 1963 at a meeting of International Union of Conservation of Nature members • Gaborone Amendment – 1983 • International, as the name shows • CITES was formed when people realized that the excess of animal trades were affecting the environment.

General Information • All import and export of species covered by the Convention now has to be authorized through a licensing system. • CITES helps to get governments to check certain trade of species • CITES is not enforced; it is an international agreement to which nations or states adhere voluntarily • CITES has been somewhat effective in allowing survival of species in the wild
