  3. Background Research • White Leghorn Chickens • Purpose is egg-laying • Extra Large • Very good quality • Lays 4 x per week • 6-7 lbs. • Most common egg-laying chickens

  4. Requirements • $0 - $500 • Up to150 Square Feet • 4-6 Chickens • Max. of 8 ft. elevation

  5. Understand • What are the positive and negative aspects of raising chickens in a residential environment? • Chickens are super loud, but you don’t have to buy eggs if you have chickens

  6. Understand • What are key health and safety features that should be incorporated into a chicken coop? • Protection from weather, protection from predators like dogs, and space for the chickens.

  7. Understand • What are the essential differences of designing a chicken coop for a rural, suburban, or urban environment? • Urban is a lot harder for design for, because there isn’t as much yard space, and there are other people as major threats. • Rural is the easiest to design for because you have much more room and privacy.

  8. Understand • How would factors such as location, weather, traffic patterns, and geography impact the design? • Because when you design you have to plan for most circumstances, and weather itself is a huge thing to design around.

  13. Prototype Materials • Balsa Wood • Hot glue • Red and white paint • Paintbrush • Chicken wire • X-Acto knife

  14. Materials • Oriented Strand Board • Screws • Paint (Red and White) • 4- 1 in. x 8 ft. Wood Beams • 4- 1 in. x 2.5 ft. Wood Beams • Chicken Wire

  15. Refine • Make the door bigger • Make the outside portion slightly larger
