ARTICLE Hindu Navvarsh Celebrating a New Beginning with Joy and Spiritual Significance  BY MOHIT-KUMAR-SHARMA  MAR 22, 2023 11:57  Hindu Navvarsh, also known as Hindu New Year, is celebrated every year in India and other parts of the world where Hinduism is practiced. This day marks the beginning of a new year according to the Hindu lunar calendar. It is usually celebrated in the months of March or April and is a time of great joy and celebration. The Hindu lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon, and it has 12 months, just like the Gregorian calendar. The first day of the first month of the lunar calendar is called Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, and it is considered to be the beginning of the New Year. Hindu Navvarsh is celebrated in different ways across different parts of India. In the northern parts of India, people clean their homes and decorate them with flowers and rangolis (intricate designs made with colored powder). They visit temples, perform puja (worship), and offer sweets and fruits to the deities. In the southern parts of India, the New Year is celebrated as Ugadi, which means "the beginning of a new era." People wake up early in the morning, take a head bath, wear new clothes, and offer prayers to God. They also prepare a special dish called Ugadi Pachadi, which is a mixture of six tastes - sweet, sour, salty, bitter, tangy, and spicy. This dish symbolizes the six different emotions of life and reminds people that life is a mixture of different experiences.

  2. In some parts of India, people also observe Navratri during this time. Navratri is a nine- day festival dedicated to the worship of the Hindu goddess Durga. It is celebrated with great fervor and devotion, and people fast, sing devotional songs, and perform Garba and Dandiya (traditional folk dances). Hindu Navvarsh is not just about celebration and festivities; it also has a spiritual significance. It is believed that on this day, Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, started his creation, and Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, went to sleep. It is also believed that Goddess Durga was born on this day and defeated the demon Mahishasura, who was causing havoc on earth. In conclusion, Hindu Navvarsh is a time of joy, celebration, and spiritual significance. It reminds people to embrace change and start afresh.
