Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, popularly known as Sam Manekshaw, was a distinguished Indian military officer who played a crucial role in India's victory in the 1971 war against Pakistan, which led to the formation of Bangladesh. Born on April 3, 1914, in Amritsar, Punjab, Manekshaw was the fifth child of Parsi parents. He attended Sherwood College in Nainital and later joined the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun. In 1934, he was commissioned into the British Indian Army's 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots, and was later transferred to the 4th Battalion, 12th Frontier Force Regiment, where he served in Burma during World War II. Manekshaw was a brilliant military strategist, and his leadership skills were evident during the 1947-48 Indo-Pakistani War, when he was the Chief of Staff of the Eastern Command. He played a vital role in the successful defense of Jammu and Kashmir against the Pakistani raiders. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan , the third-highest civilian award in India, for his contribution during the war. Manekshaw rose through the ranks of the Indian Army and became the Chief of the Army Staff in 1969. He is widely regarded as one of India's greatest military commanders and was the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal in 1973 . Manekshaw's most significant contribution came during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, which was fought over East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Under his leadership, the Indian Army launched a massive offensive against Pakistan and captured over 90,000 Pakistani soldiers. The war ended with the signing of the Shimla Agreement, which established a line of control between India and Pakistan and paved the way for the formation of Bangladesh. Manekshaw was known for his straightforwardness and wit, and his famous quote "I will not start the war, but I will finish it" is still remembered today. He was also known for his trademark beret, which he wore even in formal occasions.

  3. After his retirement from the army in 1973, Manekshaw served as the High Commissioner to Jamaica and then as the Chairman of the Indian Ex-Servicemen's League. He passed away on June 27, 2008, at the age of 94.
