FESTIVALS Celebrating Narsingh Jayanti The Triumph of Devotion Over Arrogance   BY MOHIT-KUMAR-SHARMA MAY 04, 2023 18:48 Narsingh Jayanti, also known as Narasimha Jayanti, is an important Hindu festival that celebrates the appearance day of Lord Narsingh, the fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This festival is observed on the fourteenth day of the bright fortnight in the Hindu month of Vaishakha, which usually falls in the month of May.

  2. The legend behind Narsingh Jayanti is rooted in the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. According to the legend, the demon king Hiranyakashipu had received a boon from Lord Brahma, which made him nearly invincible. He became arrogant and declared himself to be a god, demanding that his subjects worship him instead of the gods. However, his son Prahlad, a devotee of Lord Vishnu, refused to obey him and continued to worship Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu was enraged by his son's defiance and tried to kill him multiple times, but Lord Vishnu saved Prahlad each time. Finally, Hiranyakashipu challenged Lord Vishnu to appear before him in any form he wished. Lord Vishnu appeared as Narsingh, a half-man, half-lion form, and killed Hiranyakashipu at dusk on the threshold of his palace. Narsingh Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the victory of good over evil, and the triumph of devotion over arrogance. The festival is celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm across India, especially in the northern states of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. The celebrations begin with devotees observing a fast on the day of Narsingh Jayanti. They visit temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and offer prayers and perform special rituals. Devotees also recite hymns and prayers in praise of Lord Narsingh, and sing bhajans and kirtans in his honor. One of the most popular rituals of Narsingh Jayanti is the procession of Lord Narsingh's idol through the streets.
