  2. Longitudinal Waves Particle displacement is parallel to the direction of wave propagation. Sound waves are an example of longitudinal waves.

  3. Transverse Waves Particle displacement is perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. Waves passing down ropes or slinkies are examples of transverse waves.

  4. Water Waves Involve a combination of both longitudinal and transverse motions.
