Nutcracker 2024 Movie Review

The headline in the first draft of this review was, "The Nutcracker Offers Cheap Birth Control." I was too snobby. And yet the words ring true. No film in recent history works so well as a birth control story. Directed by David Gordon Green and written by Leland Douglas, the story aims for heartwarming tenderness and family-friendly shenanigans. And yet it leads to a tiresome boredom and frustration with and for these characters. Watch this comedy movie for free on Theflixtor.<br>

In theory, this drama/comedy series directed by Ben Stiller should be good. Despite its rather dark setting, it has all the hallmarks of a feel-good classic. Stiller plays Mike, a man living in Chicago who had a falling out with his sister years ago. But she and her husband recently died, leaving their four sons orphaned, and a local social worker (Linda Cardellini) is trying to find them a foster family that can take in all four. Mike is initially asked to serve as temporary guardian, but naturally finds himself growing increasingly estranged from the boys and must decide whether to accept the challenge of sole guardianship. Despite the Christmas setting and the festive mood the film wants to give us, The Nutcracker manages to achieve a certain joyful atmosphere without trying too hard. When we first meet Mike, he's a pathetic workaholic who doesn't even give his grieving kids the luxury of calling him Uncle Michael instead of Mike. He's more worried about getting back on the Monday morning pitch than he is about his orphaned kids. I don't think he should feel obligated to take on the role of a parent, but he should at least show some empathy.
