  1. Persuasive Essays: Letter to the Legislature 5 paragraph essays

  2. No mention of the word bullying or definition! • This law pertains only to "one student against another student.” • This law says that complaints MUST be in writing and submitted by the affected student, or the parent or guardian of the affected student - which means young children (or students who don't write well) have no way of reporting what happened to them. • When you put, "prompt investigation of reports of SERIOUS violations and complaints" in a law, this leaves the term "serious" up to ones on imagination.

  3. 5 paragraph essay • 1st paragraph: introduction (thesis statement and 3 points) • 2nd paragraph: point 1 with examples to support it • 3rd paragraph: point 2 with examples to support it • 4th paragraph: point 3 with examples to support it • 5th paragraph: conclusion (sums up ideas)

  4. 1. Pick your side • Consider the information given about Alabama’s law/bill on bullying. Do you think it needs improvements? (Your answer for this assignment will be YES since Alabama got a B+)

  5. 2. Choose your first line • The purpose of your essay is to convince your readers to agree with your opinion. Your essay should begin with a strong statement that grabs your readers’ attention and tells them your main idea. Choose one of the two beginnings from the next slide, or write your own.

  6. First line options • OPTION A: In doing research for Mrs. Cox’s reading class on states and their bullying laws, I found The Alabama Student Harassment Prevention Act - HB 0216 could be improved from a grade of B+ to an A++ by making the following improvements: (point 1, 2, 3) • OPTION B: Come up with your own. I must approve this.

  7. 3. Select your arguments • Pick three points from “Making the Grade” that we discussed that Alabama can improve on. These will be the supporting points in your essay. Write one paragraph for each point. In each paragraph, you will need to add details from your life, your imagination, and/or the law itself. CITE YOUR SOURCES!

  8. 4. Close your essay • Write a conclusion that sums up your main idea and supporting points. If you want, you can add a final sentence that urges your reader to take action.
