  2. Do Now • Write a short note to an older person, over 21, persuading him or her not to drink and drive.

  3. Alcohol use is widespread in American Society • 14 million adults have physical, social, and psychological problems related to alcohol use • Drinking and Driving is a big problem in the U.S. • Drinking and Driving impairs a persons vision, reaction time, and physical coordination.

  4. Alcoholism • Alcoholism- a progressive, chronic disease involving a mental and physical need for alcohol. • psychological need- mind sends the body a message saying it needs more alcohol. • Physical need- body develops a direct need for the alcohol.

  5. Stages of Alcoholism • Stage 1- a person starts using alcohol to relieve stress or to relax. Soon the person needs alcohol to cope with daily life. • Stage 2- continues to drink, body develops a need for more alcohol. May be absent from school/work to deny their problem. • Stage 3- The problem is clear to everyone. The drinkers body is strongly addicted, and the drinker is out of control. Death is very soon.

  6. Recovery- The process of learning to live an alcohol free life. • AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) – World wide self help group for people with a drinking problem • Sobriety- Living without alcohol. Becomes a lifelong struggle.

  7. Steps to Recovery • Step 1 Admission- the alcoholic admits they have a problem • Step 2- Detoxification- a process in which the alcoholics body adjusts to functioning without alcohol • Step 3- Counseling- alcoholic receives counseling on how to deal without alcohol • Step 4- Recovery- The alcoholic takes responsibility for his or her own life
