  3. 1st Amendment • Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or of the right to peaceably assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. • What 5 rights are included here?

  4. Freedom of Religion Two Clauses: • Establishment Clause: • No gov. sponsored religion • “Separation of church & state”

  5. What does that mean?? Parochial Schools Public Schools: • School Prayer • Evolution • 10 Commandments • Bible / Religious Clubs

  6. 2. Free Exercise Clause • Freedom to freely participate in the religion of your choice • Belief v. Action • Saluting the Flag / Pledge of Allegiance

  7. Can I??? • Polygamy • Religious Symbols head coverings • Conscientious Objector

  8. What if your religion says you should STOP attending school after the 8th grade? • Amish children stopped school at after the 8th grade to begin working in their community and learn their traditions • Should the gov allow them to stop attending?

  9. What is the inherent conflict between the establishment clause and the free exercise clause?
