  1. Lecture 13 March 4, 2013 Victoria Aceti Chlebus Wireless Health: There’s an app for that!

  2. Agenda • Wireless Health: For the Health Professional • Benefits & Challenges • System Design Implications • Case Study: EPIC Canto • Group Challenge Project Discussion

  3. Wireless Health: For the Health Professional • Remote health ≠ wireless health – what’s the difference? • Dr. Topol brings up may examples of wireless health – have you witnessed or heard of any of these?

  4. Wireless Health • Improved prevention • Improved maintenance • Increased patient engagement • Decrease in emergency department visits/ LOS • Aging at home • Applications are inexpensive • Adoption issues • Data flooding • Security and Privacy • Computer literacy of the population • Clinical validation Benefits Challenges

  5. How does this fit into System Design? • iPads are rampant within healthcare these days • Clinicians want ability to provide care from a distance as well as information at the point of care. • Workflows need to be re-engineered and take into account iPads, why? • Problem: • Today’s EMRs were not built for iPads • Modern functions are not consistent with how iPads work • Hospitals believe that an iPad is the same as a laptop

  6. Principles of System Design for Wireless Health • Workflows need to be re-engineered and take into account iPads, why? Clinical Work ICT Health Care System

  7. Where are we in iPad Innovativeness?

  8. Case Study: EPIC Canto • Mobile version of EPIC EMR • Bring information to the point of care • Ability to provide care remotely • How could this impact communication? • What are some unintended consequences?

  9. Group Challenge Project • 25% of final mark • You MUST justify your solution with literature and concepts discussed in class • In the final paper include: • Idea • Why it works and could solve the challenge • Potential challenges • Plan for roll out • Planned evaluation • Lessons learned • Presentation (if no one asks questions, you must have a backup for inciting discussion) • You will be emailed a peer evaluation template which you must return to me the last day of lecture.
