  1. Numeracy Across the Curriculum Christine Scheffel cscheffel@eawr.org East Alton – Wood River High School District #14 Wood River, Illinois

  2. Background: Not meeting AYP for several years High Schools That Work Initiative Reading Across the Curriculum Writing Across the Curriculum Curriculum Integration Teacher Inservice Research & Resources

  3. Why Numeracy is Important! The future labor market is reflecting a relentless decline in unskilled & semi-skilled occupations that provide gainful employment with high wages. Gainful Employment = Numeracy + Reading + Writing + Critical Thinking Skills

  4. Why Numeracy is Important? When numeracy standards are supported by all curricular areas (Math, Science, English, Social Studies, CTE, Art, etc.) the career prospects of all students will improve.

  5. Attitudes about Math: • Images of Mathematics are Negative • “I was never good at math!” • Fear of getting the “wrong” answer • Too routine and boring • Poor introduction to math in lower grades • Boy’s only subject • “When are we ever gonna use this?”

  6. Numeracy Defined • Improveaccuracy in calculation, measurement, and graphical work. • Improveinterpretation and presentation of graphs, charts, and diagrams. • Improvereasoning and problem solving.

  7. Examples of Numeracy Across the Curriculum: 1. Using and applying mathematics to solve problems 2. Numbers and the number system 3. Calculations 4. Shape, space, and measures 5. Handling data 6. Algebra

  8. Calculate in Your Head: 99 + 49 = 3 + 6 + 14 + 7 – 10 + 40= 3.5 * 1,000 = 4.2 ÷ 100 = H2O = MDCCLXXVI = Where do find 13 =

  9. Numeracy in the Media(Newspaper, Magazines, Websites, etc.) Write an explanation:

  10. Numeracy inConsumer and Family Science: A turkey is cooked for 45 minutes per kilogram plus 20 minutes. How long would you cook a 5.2 kg turkey?

  11. Numeracy in Social Studies: On August 13 of this year, the East German government closed the border between East and West Berlin with barbed-wire fences. Telephone service and mail were interrupted. Later in the week, a concrete wall was built which separated East Berlin and West Berlin for about 30 years. My tens digit is 2/3 of my hundreds digit. My units digit is the multiplicative identity element. The sum of all of my digits is 17. What year am I?

  12. Numeracy in Brit Lit Use your calculators! Juliet age is 6, 311, 520 minutes old. Calculate her approximate age in years, months, and days.

  13. Numeracy Research Model: How would you have reported the results of a backpack survey? Data Cycle: Specify the problem and plan. Interpret and discuss the data. Collect data from a variety of sources. Process and represent the data.

  14. Numeracy in World History What’s Up with 60? Ancient Sumerians and a Special Number. Made to Measure: The Ancient Egyptian System of Measurement Roman Numerals The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown (Phi, Divine Proportion, Golden Ratio)

  15. Numeracy inUnited States History Resources of the Union and Confederacy, 1861 Newspaper Article from St. Louis Post-Dispatch, February 8, 2000 Decennial Immigration Statistics World War II: Facts of War
