  9. Matthew 3:13-15 Jesus prepares for his ministry Joseph left behind his oldest son as head of household and provider for the family. Jesus had at least six younger siblings. According to Mark 6:3, James, Joses, Judas, Simon, and at least two sisters. According to an old legend, the sisters were named Mary and Salome.

  10. Matthew 3:13-15 13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

  11. Baptism • Why did Jesus insist upon being baptized? • Did Jesus have any sins to confess? • - He was sinless 2 Cor 5:21; 1 Pet 2:22 • 1 John 3:5; John 14:3; Isa 53:12 • At John’s baptism, Jesus is declaring publicly • His identity with the sinner. • This is His formal opening for His ministry: • - The Father, through the voice; • - The Holy Spirit, descending dove-like; • - The Son being baptized.

  12. Matthew 3:16-17 16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

  13. Matthew 4:1-2 1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

  14. Four Men Fasted 40 Days 1. Moses (Deut. 9:9,18,25; Deut. 10:10) 2. Joshua (Ex 24:13-18; Ex 32:15-17) 3. Elijah (1 Kings 19:7-18) 4. Jesus (Matthew 4:1-11; Luke 1:1-22)

  15. Jesus Is Tempted Tempted: Greek Word: πειράζω Greek Strong’s Number 3985 Transliteration:peirazō Phonetic Pronunciation: pi-rad-zo Root:from G3984 Part of Speech:v From G3984 (peira); to test (object), i.e. endeavor, scrutinize, entice, discipline :- assay, examine, go about, prove, tempt (-er), try. Found 39 times in scripture

  16. Jesus Is Tempted The word tempt has a twofold meaning: 1. "Incite or entice to evil; seduce." There is something in each of us which causes us to yield to evil. This was not true of Jesus. "...the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me" (John 14:30). He was "...holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners..." (Heb. 7:26). So the temptation for Jesus had to be different from that which would cause man to fall, in that it needed to be a much greater temptation. 2. "Test." God does not tempt men with evil according to James 1:13. Yet, we are told "...God did tempt Abraham..." (Gen. 22:1). This means that God was testing the faith of Abraham.

  17. Jesus Is Tempted John 14:30 (KJV) 30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. Hebrews 7:26-27 (KJV) 26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; 27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

  18. Jesus Is Tempted James 1:13 (KJV) 13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: Genesis 22:1 (KJV) 1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.

  19. Matthew 4:3-4 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

  20. Deuteronomy 8:3 3 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

  21. Matthew 4:5-7 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

  22. Deuteronomy 6:16 16 Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah. Massah : Exodus 17:7 (KJV) Ex 7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?

  23. Matthew 4:8-10 8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

  24. Deut. 6:13 and 10:20 Deuteronomy 6:13 (KJV) 13 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name. Deuteronomy 10:20 (KJV) 20 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name.

  25. Three Dimensions 1) The desire of the flesh (appeal to the appetite). 2) Lust of the eyes (appeal to our aesthetic nature). 3) The pride of life (appeal to our spiritual pride).
