  1. Learn möreaboüt ADJECTÎVES ATER, AINA MAE B. GONZALES, SUZETTE MAE G. RAMPOLA, SUMMER L. TRAPA, AILEEN B.

  2. What is ADJECTIVE? Adjectives are words used to describe nouns and pronouns. Adjectives give more information about a noun. Adjectives are used in making your writing more interesting. e.g. A black dog - An angry man - A round theatre

  3. Degrees of Adjective There are three forms of adjectives according to degree: Positive Comparative Superlative

  4. Positive Adjective The positive adjective is the simple form of the adjective. It does not compare the noun/pronoun with any other noun.

  5. Examples • Bessy is a sweetgirl. • Thelargebed is mine. • She’s a good daughter. • It is very expensive. • His boss often buys bigtoys for his son.

  6. Comparative Adjective The comparative adjectives are used when describing the differences between ONLY two items.

  7. Forming Comparative Adjective 1.With one syllable adjectives and sometimes two syllable adjectives, especially those ending in "y", we add the suffix “-er“.

  8. Examples • Kelly is sweeter than Bessy. (sweet +-er= sweeter) • Her bed is larger than yours. (large + -er= larger) • The toy truck is bigger than the toy car. (big + -er= bigger)

  9. 2. When the adjective is multi-syllabic we sometimes use the terms "more" or "less" to describe the comparison. Never use both “-er" and "more" or "less".

  10. She’s a better daughter than Sonja. • The lamp is more expensive than the vase.

  11. Superlative adjective Superlative adjectives are used when describing three items or more. They are used to express the highest degree of the item you are expressing in comparison to the other items. They are the most extreme in the group of items.

  12. Forming Superlative Adjective 1.With one syllable adjectives and sometimes two syllable adjectives, especially those ending in "y", we add the suffix “-est".

  13. Examples • Jenna is the sweetest of the girls. • My parents has the largest bed in the house. • The biggest toy he bought was the robot.

  14. 2. When the adjective is multi-syllabic we sometimes use the terms "most" or "least" to describe the comparison. Never use both "est" and "most" or "least".

  15. Examples • The best daughter in the clan is Shery Lou. • The crown is the most expensive thing in the museum.

  16. NOTE: • When the adjective ends in "e" just add an "st". (E.g., late, later, latest) • When the adjective has a consonant, vowel, consonant ending, double the ending letter and add "est". (E.g., red, redder, reddest)

  17. When the adjective ends in a "y", change the "y" to "i" and add "est". (E.g., early, earlier, earliest) • Again, remember: There are always irregular forms that don't follow these rules. E.g., good, better, best; bad, worse, worst; little, less, least.
