  3. Garmin Map 76S GPS Receivers Students armed with Garmin Map 76S units participated in a road-side clean up effort during Earth Week, April 16-20, 2007. Four students in the Geographic Information Systems and Visualization Program participated in the garbage collection efforts facilitated by the campus Environmental Science Club. As part of a class project, waypoints were marked at the location of each garbage item collected, along with a recorded description of the item. The receivers were then brought back into the classroom where waypoints were downloaded and exported for analysis in ESRI’s ArcGIS 9.1 of the distribution of the collected garbage. TRESTE Year 2

  4. Garmin Map 76S GPS Receivers Additionally, the GPS units have been made available for students to check out, which has proven beneficial as it assists in skill reinforcement and gives them opportunities to explore real-world applications of concepts learned in the classroom. The Environmental Science Club checked two GPS receivers out for preliminary planning efforts in establishing a campus nature trail. Another student, who participates in a local Master Gardener Program, utilized one of the GPS receivers to create a map of points of pine tree planting sites, which were adopted and will be maintained by local grade school students. Further, units have been checked out to navigate and enjoy geocaching activities. TRESTE Year 2
