  1. FIVE STAR SAFETY & HEALTH CONSULTANCY DOLE ACCREDITATION # 1030-082301-0052 WELCOMES YOU TOConstruction Safety for Site Safety Officers Training

  2. DOLE ACCREDITATION # 1030-082301-0052 FIVE STAR SAFETY & HEALTH CONSULTANCY DEMOLITION & EXPLOSIVES

  3. DEMOLITION DEFINITION: Complete or partial dismantling of a building or structure by pre-planned & controlled methods or procedures

  4. DEMOLITION RULE 1417 RULE 1417.01 – All demolition operations of buildings or structures over six (6) meters high shall be supervised by a competent supervisor. Only workers directly involved in the operations shall enter the demolition area in a distance 1½ times the height of the structure.

  5. HAZARDS IN DEMOLITION OPERATIONS • Falls • Being hit/trapped/crushed by objects • Manual handling • Hazardous substances & dangerous goods • Noise & vibration • Electric shock • Fires & explosions • Equipment

  6. FALLS • Falling through fragile roofing material • Falling through openings • Falling from open edges • Falling out of elevating work platforms • Failure of equipment

  7. FALLS • Falling from roof or other elevated area • Lift shafts • Collapse of flooring • Collapse of ground • Tripping over debris

  8. BEING HIT/TRAPPED/CRUSHED BY OBJECTS • Falling debris (from service ducts & lift shafts) • Accidental/uncontrolled collapse of a structure • Use of equipment (Crane lifting loads) • Failure of structural members (Load bearing steelwork)

  9. MANUAL HANDLING • Using equipment • Operating equipment • Manual demolition • Lifting material • Clearing up • Loading trucks/bins

  10. HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES • Lead – lead based paint, tanks containing lead based petrol • Asbestos – sprayed coatings, insulation materials, fire resistant walls/partitions, cement sheets, flooring materials • PCBs – stones, bricks & concrete aggregates

  11. DANGEROUS SUBSTANCES • Flammable liquids/vapors & sludge from industrial process & confined space

  12. NOISE & VIBRATION • Equipment • Falling debris • Explosives

  13. ELECTRICAL SHOCKS • Live wires from structures

  14. FIRES & EXPLOSIONS • Flammable materials • Welding or cutting • Leaks of explosive gases from accidental damage of pipes • Arson especially when the site is unattended • Bomb from world war

  15. EQUIPMENT • Electrocution • Plant failure • Dropping material • Equipment striking persons • Noise & vibration • Flying particles

  16. EQUIPMENT • Dust & other airborne hazards • Falling objects onto operators • Structural collapse of floors • Welding & cutting hazards • Falls

  17. METHODS OF DEMOLITION • Manual – use of handheld tools • Mechanical – use of heavy equipment, wires & chain, power shear, etc. • Explosives – use of explosives • High frequency vibration

  18. DEMOLITION TECHNIQUE • Sequential – gradual reduction of height in reverse order to its construction • Induced – key structural members are weakened or removed, causing the whole part of the structure to collapse

  19. DEMOLITION PLANNING Why plan? • Identify the hazards • Meet Legislative Requirements • Ensure appropriate equipment • Ensure safe disposal of materials • Determine appropriate methods of demolition • Determine cost of demolition

  20. DEMOLITION PLANNING Key Areas of Planning • Type of construction • Type of structure • State of structure • Structural hazards • Hazardous substances

  21. DEMOLITION PLANNING Key Areas of Planning • Location of services • General conditions of adjoining structures • Access & egress • Suitability of site for equipment

  22. DEMOLITION PLANNING Work plan • Technique & method of demolition • Sequence of work operation • Estimate of time of completion • Equipment to be used • Proposed Access & egress • Public protection

  23. DEMOLITION PLANNING Work plan • Bracing & shoring • Disconnection of services • Methods of handling/disposal of demolished materials • PPE requirements • Demolition personnel & supervisor

  24. PROCEDURE Manual demolition • All utilities shut off • All glasses removed • Shoring or other measures implemented • Protection of workers from fall • Stairs to be demolished last

  25. PROCEDURE Equipment • Cranes • Bulldozer • Excavators • Work platform • Wrecking ball

  26. DEMOLITION HAZARD CONTROL • Elimination • Substitution • Isolation • Engineering control • Administrative control • Personal Protective Equipment

  27. EXPLOSIVES RULE 1419 1419.01: SUPERVISION • A competent person shall be in charge & personally present in the whole blasting operation • Names of designated persons to handle the explosives shall be posted in the field office • Record of explosives received & used shall be properly maintained & open for inspection

  28. EXPLOSIVES RULE 1140 1141.01 This rule shall apply to the manufacture, handling & storage of explosives 1143 • Explosives shall be manufactured, handled or stored in approved spaces • Buildings for explosion shall not be use for other purpose • Approved precautions shall be undertaken where explosives are manufactured, handled or stored

  29. RULE 1146 STORAGE OF EXPLOSIVES • Rule 1146.01: Class I magazines - over 22.5 kgs. • Rule 1146.02: Class II magazines – less than 22.5 kgs. • Rule 1146.03: Temporary storage at job sites – Class II magazines shall be away from structures & roadways at least 45 m. more than 11.4 kgs.; 15 m. less than 11.4 kgs.
