  1. In the knowledge society of the 21st century, language competence and inter-cultural understanding are not optional extras, they are an essential part of being a citizen. Language skills are also vital in improving understanding between people here and in the wider world, and in supporting global citizenship by breaking down barriers of ignorance and suspicion between nations. - DES, 2003

  2. Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Turkish, Caucasian languages Swahili, Amharic, Somali, Hausa, Yoruba, Zulu Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Sanskrit, Sinhala, Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil Indonesian/Malay, Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian/Khmer, Burmese SOAS degree courses

  3. Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Finnish, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Ukrainian Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, Icelandic, Faroese Hebrew, Yiddish UCL degree courses

  4. SOAS: Azeri, Uzbek, Kazakh, Kurdish, Pashto Berber, Tigrinya, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Shona, Twi, Igbo Panjabi, Bihari UCL: Albanian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Slovene Mandarin, Japanese Arabic, Greek Non-degree courses only

  5. CETL staffing • Director • Administrator • Secretary • Half-time researcher in language pedagogy • 2 half-time multi-media programmers • 4 half-time teacher trainers • 4 half-time learning advisors • 1 half-time assessment and curriculum specialist

  6. The CETL will develop new multi-media language learning resources

  9. The CETL will promote the study of less commonly taught languages

  10. The CETL will develop resources for the learning and teaching of UK community languages

(Some thoughts on Panjabi) • Anjali frm east londoni myself speak punjabi, n i fink its a gr8 language! also i luv punjab!!! goin der dis summer!! yay!!! • Yuvraj from south staffsi think panjabi is a very good language and to me it is like english as i speak it every day. i only know a few words and sentences but i understand it fully.

  12. The CETL will design and provide training courses • in language teaching skills for new teachers • in the teaching of community languages • in language learning skills for new students • in the preparation of learning and teaching materials

  13. The CETL grant will enable us to upgrade language learning facilities at SOAS and UCL

  14. The CETL will provide a focal point for research in the teaching and learning of less commonly taught languages
