  6. African Nationalism • Nationalism: Sense of pride in and devotion to one’s country • Africans realized they would have to unify to win independence

  7. Pan-Africanism • Called for unifying all of Africa • Early 1900s • “Africa for the Africans”

  8. Independence • Post-WWII • European countries weakened by war • USSR and US spoke out against European rule in Africa • 1950s-1970s – African countries gained independence
