This presentation provides a detailed overview of construction drawings, also known as working drawings. It explains their purpose, components, and importance in any construction project. Learn about architectural and engineering drawing sets, how they communicate design intent, and how they guide the construction process from start to finish. The process of creating construction drawings usually begins when a building owner or developer decides to build a new facility—be it a house, office, or any infrastructure. The owner contacts an architect to design the building. The architect develops several drawings that represent different aspects of the design. These are collectively known as Construction Drawings. When all the drawings are compiled together, they are called Construction Documents (CDs). These documents are then used by engineers and contractors to build the structure. WHERE DO CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS COME FROM?
WHAT DO CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS SHOW? Construction drawings provide complete information about the project, both visually and in writing. The visual part, known as graphic information, includes symbols and drawings that represent parts of the building such as doors, windows, lights, and furniture. Dimensions that show sizes and locations Text notes that give additional explanations Legends that describe materials, finishes, and types of components
ELEMENTS OF CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS Graphic Symbols Dimensions Text Notes Small pictures or marks used to represent objects in the building, like a door, window, or electrical outlet. Numbers that show the size of each object and where it is placed in the building. Short descriptions that explain special features or instructions related to a design element.
TYPES OF CONSTRUCTION DRAWING SETS Construction drawings are divided into two main types: Architectural Drawings Show design details like floor plans, elevations, ceiling layouts, and custom furniture. Engineering Drawings (Shop Drawings) Include structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER DRAWINGS ARE READY? Once the architect and engineers have completed the drawings, they are reviewed and approved by the building owner. After approval, the construction drawings become the official guide for the builders. The construction team then uses these documents to begin work on-site. Every wall built, pipe laid, or fixture installed is based on the construction drawings. Any changes during the project must be updated in these drawings to ensure everything stays accurate. In short, construction drawings are the foundation of the actual building process.
