This objective of this lesson is to teach students how to recognize and label different protozoans commonly found in pond water, including Sarcodine and Ciliate protozoans. Students will also survey representatives of animal-like protozoans such as Mastigophora, Sarcodina, Labyrinthomorpha, Apicomplexa, Microspora, Acetospora, Myxozoa, and Ciliophora.

Today’s Objective: 10/31/02 • TSW be able to recognize protozoans commonly found in pond water. • TSW label a diagram of two protozoans (Sarcodine and Ciliate) • TSW survey representatives of each of the animal-like protozoans.
Sarcomastigophora • Have flagella, pseudopodia or both • Subphylum Mastigophora • One or more flagella • Volvox, Giardia, Trypanosoma, Euglena • Subphylum Sarcodina • Pseudopods • Amoeba, Radiolarians
Labyrinthomorpha • Marine or estuarine • Saprozoic or parasitic on marine plants • Labyrinthula
Apicomplexa • Parasitic • Apical complex – penetrates host cells • Plasmodium, Toxoplasma
Microspora • Single-celled spores • Intracellular parasites • Nosema
Acetospora • Multicellular spores • Parasitic to only invertebrates • Haplosporidium
Myxozoa • Multicellular spores • Parasitic • Myxosoma
Ciliophora • Lots of cilia • Heterotrophs • Macronucleus and micronucleus • Paramecium, Stentor, Euplotes, Vorticella
