Circulatory System

anatomy
Anatomy
  • The heart, blood, and blood vessels (capillaries, veins, and arteries) make up the Circulatory System
the heart
The Heart
  • The heart is an organ that relaxes and contracts 70 to 80 times per minute to pump blood throughout the body.
  • The heart takes deoxygenated blood from the veins and, using the lungs, pumps oxygenated blood through many arteries.
the blood
The Blood
  • The blood travels through blood vessels.
  • Things like nutrients, water, O2, CO2, salts, and waste products are transported through the blood.
  • The blood also helps with bodily defenses.
blood vessels
Blood Vessels
  • All arteries carry blood from the heart to all other organs.
  • Veins carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart.
  • The capillaries allow for gaseous exchange between the capillaries and tissue fluids
medical issues
Medical Issues
  • Heart disease, aneurysms, high blood pressure, varicose veins, heart-attacks, heart burns, vascular disease, and heart bypasses are all things that can occur because of problems in the cardiovascular system.
aneurysms
Aneurysms
  • A brain aneurysm is when the artery that supplies blood to the brain has a weak wall.
  • If the aneurysm ruptures, it sends blood to the school and can case a stroke.
heart bypass
Heart Bypass
  • Heart Bypasses occur when coronary arteries are blocked and those are treated by finding an alternative path to the heart.
