Climate Change Forum Carpaticum 2016: Impacts and Adaptation in Carpathian Communities

This summary discusses the climate change-related issues discussed at the Forum Carpaticum in Bucharest, Romania, and highlights the actions taken by the S4C community in relation to adaptation to climate change. The need for common international projects, local initiatives, and a well-coordinated monitoring network for the Carpathian region is emphasized.

  1. Climate Change related issues on Forum Carpaticum 2016 in Bucharest and in S4C community activities – short summary The Fifth Meeting of the Carpathian Convention Working Group on Adaptation to Climate Change, 27-28.10.2016 Dominik Kaim S4C Science for the Carpathians

  2. Plan of the presentation: • Forum Carpaticum and Science for the Carpathians – short overview • Climate change related issue on FC 2016, Bucharest • S4C members actions, related to the topic of adaptation on climate change – case studies

  3. Common international projects realized by research institutions from the Carpathian countries should be established. They should concentrate on observed and predicted impacts of climate change on specific economic sectors in a local scale. So far many institutions from non-Carpathian countries were involved in various Carpathian projects and some results obtained seem to be of limited innovative value and applicability for specific Carpathian communities. For the international projects mentioned, a common data base from the well-coordinated monitoring on a network of original meteorological stations in the Carpathian region is needed. There is also a need for more local/national initiatives aimed to transfer the scientific information to the society, in order to rise and improve the public awareness concerning the environmental changes, including climate change, in the Carpathian region.
