  1. LEADERSHIP THROUGH YOUR SPIRITUAL GIFTS “What are they, which ones do I have, and how can I use them in my corps?”

  2. SESSION ONE “DEFINITIONS”

  3. AIM -- TO SET A FOUNDATION OF UNDERSTANDING THE SOURCE AND ULTIMATE PURPOSE OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS

  4. A PERSONAL INVENTORY

  5. DEFINITIONS OF GIFTS McRae says… “ A divine endowment of special ability for service upon a member of the Body of Christ.”

  6. DEFINITIONS OF GIFTS Thayer says… “ Extraordinary powers, distinguishing certain Christians and enabling them to serve the Church of Christ, the reception of which is due to the power of Divine grace operating in their souls by the Holy Spirit.”

  7. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS Using your Bible, discover what is taught about spiritual gifts, known as Charismata, grace gifts...

  8. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS • What is the meaning of the “Body of Christ”?

  9. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS Ephesians 1:22 - 23 says “And God has put all things under the authority of Christ, and he gave him this authority for the benefit of the church. And the church is his body; it is filled by Christ, who fills everything everywhere with his presence.”

  10. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS Colossians 1:12 - 18 says… “… always thanking the Father, who has enabled you to share the inheritance that belongs to God’s holy people, who live in the light. For he has rescued us from the one who rules in the kingdom of darkness, and he has brought us into the Kingdom of his dear Son.

  11. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUALGIFTS “God has purchased our freedom with his blood and has forgiven all our sins. Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before God made anything at all and is supreme over all creation.

  12. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS “Christ is the one through whom God created everything in heaven and earth. He made the things we can see and the things we can’t see -- kings, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities. Everything has been created through him and for him.

  13. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS He existed before everything else began, and he holds all creation together. Christ is the head of the church, which is his body. He is the first of all who will rise from the dead, so he is first in everything.”

  14. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS • The Church • Operates on the power of the Holy Spirit • Christ is the Head … members of the Church are the OTHER body parts!

  15. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS 2) According to 1 Corinthians 12:12 - 27, what kind of “system” did God choose for organizing the body of Christ?

  16. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS 1 Corinthians 12:12 - 27 says… “The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up only one body. So it is with the body of Christ.

  17. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS “Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into Christ’s body by one Spirit, and we have all received the same Spirit. Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part.

  18. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS “If the foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that does not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am only an ear and not any eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body?

  19. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS “Suppose the whole body were an eye -- the how would you hear? Or if your whole body were just one big ear, how could you smell anything? But God made our bodies with many parts, and he has put each part just where he wants it.

  20. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS “What a strange thing a body would be if it had only one part! Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.”

  21. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS “In fact, some of the parts that seem weakest and least important are really the most necessary. And the parts we regard as less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care. So we carefully protest from the eyes of other those parts that should not be seen,

  22. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS “while other parts do not require this special care. So God has put the body together in such a way that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity. This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other equally.

  23. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS “If one part suffers, all the part suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. Now all of your together are Christ’s body, and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it.”

  24. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS • NOT: Democracy • NOT: Benevolent Dictatorship • BUT: An organism… system with a head who is Christ

  25. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS 3) What is the source of spiritual gifts?

  26. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS 1 Corinthians 12:11 says… “It is the one and only Holy Spirit who distributes these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.”

  27. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS • What are the Old Testament prophecies in Joel 2:28 and Ezekiel 36:26 - 27?

  28. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS Joel 2:28 says… “Then after I have poured out my rains again, I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophecy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will se visions.”

  29. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS Ezekiel 36: 26 - 27 says… “And I will give you a new heart with new and right desires, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony heart of sin and give you a new, obedient heart. And I will put my Spirit in you so you will obey my laws and do whatever I command.”

  30. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS • Men and women will receive gifts • Our hearts and spirits will be totally transformed by the Spirit’s doing

  31. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS 5) When were these prophecies fulfilled? Acts 2:17 - 21 says… “ ‘In the last days, God said, I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophecy, your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.

  32. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS “ ‘In those days I will pour out my Spirit upon al my servants, men and women alike, and they will prophecy. And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below -- blood and fire and clouds of smoke.’ ”

  33. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS “ ‘The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon will turn blood red, before that great and glorious day of the Lord arrives. And anyone who calls on the name of the lord will be saved.’ ”

  34. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS • At Pentecost… displayed by sounds of a storm, tongues of fire, speaking in unknown languages (tongues)

  35. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS 6) Who has spiritual gifts? 1 Peter 4:10 says… “God has given gifts to each of you from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Manage them well so that God’s generosity can flow through you.”

  36. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS 1 Corinthians 12:7 says… “A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of helping the entire church.” • All believers are recipients of spiritual gifts -- some have several

  37. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS 7) According to 1 Corinthians 12:18, do I achieve or receive my spiritual gift? “But God made our bodies with many parts, and he has put each part just where he wants it.”

  38. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS • Gifts are received, not achieved • I don’t choose what I am given… I don’t control the giving • It is a “grace gift”

  39. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS 8) Do I have any responsibility in receiving my spiritual gift? 1 Corinthians 14:1 says… “Let love be your highest goal, but also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives, especially the gift of prophecy.”

  40. BIBLICAL TEACHING ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS • Follow the way of love • Eagerly desire spiritual gifts • Find out which are yours
