  5. Lleida • Lleida is a city in the west of Catalonia, Spain. • It’s economy is mostly based on commerce and services, with an important agricultural factor as well. • It is a traditionally Catalan-speakingtown and province.

  6. Main Sights MONUMENTS The SeuVella Old cathedral, also known as “Lleida Castle”, is definitely the city’s most emblematic monument.This unique cathedral sits on top of the hill overlooking the city and affords magnificent views of Lleida and the surrounding countryside of Segrià county. Construction of the cathedral began in 1203, but the bell tower was not completed until 1431. The first master builder was Pere de Coma.

Former Hospital of Santa MariaA 15th-16th century Gothic-plateresque construction and current headquarters of the Institutd'EstudisIlerdencs.The main door shows a picture of the Virgin and shields with the Lleida coats of arms. A stone staircase that leads to a gallery with pointed arches raises from the wonderful central patio.The building houses the Gothic Room, a place for temporary expositions with a baroque altarpiece dedicated to Our Lady of Los Angeles, made in 1738 by F. Escarpenter.The Archaeology Room has prehistoric, Iberian, Roman and Visigothic material. La Paeria The city council and also, a historical site with remains and pieces of art from Roman times.

  10. Natural town In Lleida, within the centre of the town, we can find natural areas which are unique due to their size and their great ecological value. La Mitjana is a surprising natural area that spreads out to the boundary of the city. It is a riverside wetland area spreading over 90 hectares, which was declared Area of Natural Interest in 1979. Its vegetation and fauna are the outstanding points of interest in Mitjana Park. Because of their habits, birds are particularly easy to watch. The riverside park Camps Elisis Going for a walk along the avenue parallel to the right bank of the River Segre we will see the city's noble façade La Mitjana This public park contains remarkable buildings, such as the Café Chalet and the Templet de la Música, two 19th-century constructions, or the Aquarium, a Modernist brick building decorated with glazed tiles and engraved beams. In the gardens we can see several sculptures.

  13. Sardana The sardana is a type of circle dance. It has been popular since the 16th century but modern choreography was established as late as the end of the 19th century. Music for the sardana is played by a cobla, a band consisting of 10 wind instruments, double bass and a tamborí (very small drum) played by 11 musicians.

  14. Aplec del caragol • It is a snail celebration that takes place in Lleida every year in May. • 12 tonnes of snails are cooked (in many different ways) and eaten in three days.

Castellers • A castellis a human tower built during festivals in many places in Catalonia. • It is considered a success when everybody has climbed into place and then come down safely. • There are many types of castells, according to the number of levels (up to 10) and the number of persons per level (between 1 and 5).

  16. Correfocs Correfocs, thefireworksparade. Thiswordliteralymeans “firerun”. Itconsists in aparade of peopledressedlike “devils” and infernal animals holding fireworks. Anyoneisinvitedto dance underthefire.
