  2. Hocus Pocus! • What’s our focus? • Our focus today is to learn about different genres under fiction and nonfiction and identify books in each genre.

  3. Reading Genres • What is a genre? • A genre is a type of text or story. It can be identified by different characteristics that are in the story.

  4. Books are divided into two main categories: Fiction and Nonfiction

  5. Fiction • A made up story • Can tell about things that could happen • Is read for fun • Characters may be like real people or imaginary

  6. Nonfiction • It has facts that can be checked and proven. • The author knows all about this information. • It is read to gain information on a subject. • It is TRUE!

  7. Books are put into groups based on what they have in common: These are called GENRES!

  14. Genre #1 Stories that are told again and again. Sometimes the story changes. This genre includes folktales, legends, fables, fairy tales, tall tales, and myths from different cultures.
