  1. D. PAVIA CHEM 425a/552 NATURAL PRODUCTS CHEMISTRY THE BUFF PROBLEM PART ONE. A) Find the indicated number of each type of alkaloid given below. B) Draw the alkaloid’s structure, and name its source. C) Using a highlighter or felt-tip pen, circle the heterocyclic ring(s) system(s) that would be used to classify the alkaloid and name them. 3 cinchona 3 opium 2 pyrrolizidine 3 purine 5 indole 5 isoquinoline 2 benzylisoquinoline 3 tropane 2 quinoline Your textbook (Hesse) would be a good starting point. You could also try the book on reserve, especially those by Swan, Pelletier, Cordell or Bentley.

  2. THE BUFF PROBLEM PART TWO. Pick one of the alkaloids you drew in Part One and draw the chemical structure using ChemDraw (or Isis Draw). Your choice should have at least two rings (one heterocyclic, in a bicyclic format) and a side chain of at least three carbons with at least one heteroatom. When you have completed the structure cut and paste it into a Word document. Center it and adjust its size. The word document should include, at a minimum, your name and the course number and title as a heading. Underneath the structure you pasted into the document, type (using Word) the name of the compound you drew and its botanical name. Add anything else you wish (source, uses, pharmacological effect, etc.) Print the document and turn it in as Part Two of this assignment.
