  1. I Taller de Articulacion: e-CienciaResumen - Area de Astronomia D. 2. Espacio - la Frontera Final Y Bandwidth!

  3. Data Petabutts!

  4. I Taller de Articulacion: e-CienciaResumen - Area de Astronomia • Large personal bias! • Easy job - everyone talked about astronomy • Chilean astronomy already competitve globally but proper growth/use of e-science essential to improve • 10% Chilean time on international telescopes is a TREMENDOUS and UNIQUE driver • More BIG telescopes will soon come (e.g. LSST, ALMA) and others being planned… • Current data rates already very high and will soon (a few years) be astronomical… • WE MUST ACT NOW, AND WELL, TO KEEP GLOBALLY COMPETITIVE, PROPERLY USE OUR UNIQUE ADVANTAGE AND PREPARE FOR THE DATA AVALANCHE (~15 TB/NIGHT)!

  5. Musts • Chile should join IVOA - ChiVO! • KAWAX project already addressing this in detail but we should JOIN NOW! • Will be first South American member! • Requires leader, leadership… • Also funding for software/middleware development, hardware maintainence

  6. Musts • Increased bandwith ESSENTIAL! • Immediate goal - 1Gbps, Ideal - 5-10 Gbps • Essential for moving/analyzing data, collaborations • Chile should invest more in basic research!

  7. Highly Desirable • Chilean National Data Center(s) • Operational center for ChiVO • Taller/tutorial re: use and development of VO • Decadal Survey - plan and act as a NATIONAL COMMUNITY • Revise negotiation process with new facilities • SOCHIAS should play strong role • Can we jointly apply for Comite-Mixto ESO-Chile/ALMA/Gemini funds?

  8. Highly Desirable • Chileans should find a niche to fill in software/middleware/services/tools for applications related to LSST and/or ALMA • That way we can actually CONTRIBUTE to these projects and not just USE them • Super Computing Center • Astronomy + other disciplines - unite!
