  3. I. René Descartes (1596-1650, 笛卡尔) A French philosopher, mathematician, scientist, and writer I think, therefore I am (我思故我在) • He has been dubbed the "Father of Modern Philosophy”

  4. 1. Childhood • Descartes was born near Tours in 1596 in French. • His father was a lawyer in a district court. • His mother passed away when he was one year old I eat, therefore I am

  5. His father said that when Descartes was a baby, his healthy was not good, and usually suffered from illnesses. After his mother died, he was taken care by his family maid. He felt curious about everything.

  6. When he was eight, he developed his lifelong habit of lying in bed until late in the morning. He was not sleeping, but thinking. Baby, You are Late for School. Get up! Mom, I am not sleeping, I am thinking

  7. 2. Education In 1612, he left school and then went to Paris, where he devoted himself to the study of mathematics. He went to the University of Poitiers to study law, four years later he got his doctor degree.

  8. After getting doctor degree, he joined the army of Prince Maurice of Orange. During his military life, he spent four or five years traveling through Germany, Denmark, Holland, Switzerland and Italy.
