  3. INMATE VISITATION B. Role of the Correctional Officer: • Security function: maintain the order of the visiting and reception areas, prevent the passing of contraband

  4. INMATE VISITATION • Treatment function: visits from family and friends can be important factors in the treatment and rehabilitation of inmates

  5. INMATE VISITATION C. Types of visits 1. Contact: there are no/minimal barriers between inmates & visitors. Inmates & visitors may be permitted embrace at beginning & end of visit & hold hands during visit

  6. INMATE VISITATION 2. Non-contact: there is a solid barrier between inmates & visitors. Physical contact is prohibited. Inmates & visitors talk through holes in the barrier or by use of telephone handsets

  7. INMATE VISITATION D. Responsibilities of the Visiting Officer 1. Receive & treat visitors properly a. Kind, courteous & considerate 2. Maintain the security of the visiting area by preventing the passing of contraband between inmates & visitors

  8. INMATE VISITATION 3. Maintain the order of the visiting room 4. Receiving Visitors 5. Be polite & courteous to all visitors a. You may be their only contact with the institution

  9. INMATE VISITATION 6. Process all visitors as quickly as possible, ensuring that visitors have proper identification as required by institutional regulations

  10. INMATE VISITATION 7. Receiving Visitors a. Ensure that visitors comply with institutional regulations regarding demeanor, attire, etc. b. Try to minimize delays between the arrival of the visitor & the actual start of the visit.

  11. INMATE VISITATION c. Check on the status of inmates if necessary d. Quietly & politely inform the visitor of the reason for any delay.

  12. INMATE VISITATION 8. Prevent the Passage of Contraband a. Thoroughly search/inspect the visiting area before & after visiting. b. Ensure that the area is clean, neat & free of contraband. Ensure that the visiting area is secured when not in use.

  13. INMATE VISITATION c. Search visitors in compliance with institutional procedures prior to them entering the visiting area

  14. INMATE VISITATION d. Ensure that visitors take into the visiting area only what is permitted by institutional regulation. e. All other property should be secured in accordance with institutional procedures, preferably in locked storage areas

  15. INMATE VISITATION f. Thoroughly search inmates before & after visits. Depending on institutional policy, this may be a frisk/clothed body search or a strip search. g. Ensure that inmates take into the visiting area only that which is permitted by institutional regulations.

  16. INMATE VISITATION h. Ensure that inmates are properly attired & groomed, i.e., clothing is neat & face clean, etc.

  17. INMATE VISITATION i. Maintain the order of the visiting area a. Ensure that inmates & visitors engage in quiet conversation. b Loud, boisterous & offensive conversation &/or inappropriate behavior on the part of either the inmate or visitor is not permitted

  18. INMATE VISITATION c. Ensure that inmates & visitors get the full allotted time for visits. d. Ensure that the visiting room is clean & neat at all times. For many people this is their only contact with the institution, and the condition of the visiting room is what they will remember the institution.
