  4. What is GIS? A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer-based system including software, hardware, people, and geographic information A GIS can: create, edit, query, analyze, and display map information on the computer

Geographic Information System Geographic – 80% of government data collected is associated with some location in space Information- attributes, or thecharacteristics (data), can be used to symbolize and provide further insight into a given location System – a seamless operation linking the information to the geography – which requires hardware, networks, software, data, and operational procedures …not just software! …not just for making maps!

  10. What is ArcGIS ?The Complete Geographic Information System ArcGIS is a geographic information system (GIS) for working with maps and geographic information. It is used for: creating and using maps; compiling geographic data; analyzing mapped information; sharing and discovering geographic information; using maps and geographic information in a range of applications; and managing geographic information in a database.
  11. What is ArcGIS Desktop ? ArcGIS Desktop includes a suite of integrated applications: ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcToolbox. Using these three applications together, you can perform any GIS task, simple to advanced, including mapping, data management, geographic analysis, data editing and geo-processing.
  12. ArcGIS for Desktop is under four functionality levels: ArcGIS Desktop refers to ArcReader, ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo—a family of scalable software products. ArcReader: ArcReader is a free, easy-to-use product that allows anyone to view, explore, and print published map files(Map viewing , Identify map features, Basic querying ,Map printing). ArcView:ArcView is the world’s most popular desktop mapping and GIS software. ArcView includes all the functionality of ArcReader and provides geographic data visualization, query, analysis, and integration capabilities along with the ability to create and edit geographic data.
  13. ArcEditor: ArcEditor includes all the functionality of ArcView and adds the power to create and edit data in a geodatabase. Additional functionality includes support for multiuser editing, versioning, feature-linked annotation, and advanced topologic editing. ArcInfo: ArcInfo is the complete GIS data creation, update, query, mapping, and analysis system. Within the ArcGIS software family, ArcInfo is the top of the line. It includes all the functionality of ArcEditor and adds the advanced geoprocessing capabilities that make ArcInfo the de facto standard for GIS
  14. Arc Catalog:- The ArcCatalog application helps you organize and manage all of your GIS data. It includes tools for browsing and finding geographic information, recording, viewing, and managing metadata, quickly viewing any dataset, and defining the schema structure for your geographic data layers.

  16. ArcToolbox:- ArcToolbox is a simple application containing many GIS tools used for geo-processing.There are two versions of ArcToolbox: the complete ArcToolbox that comes with ArcInfo and lighter version that comes with ArcView and ArcEditor.
  17. ArcToolbox for ArcView and ArcEditor:- ArcToolbox for ArcView and ArcEditor Contains more than 40 commonly used tools for data conversion, map projection, data mangement.

ArcToolbox for ArcInfo:- ArcToolbox for ArcInfo comes with a complete, comprehensive set of tools ( well over 150 ) for geo-processing, data conversion, overlay analysis, map projection, map sheet management, and much more. It includes tools for all the Arc: prompt commands for Arcinfo workstation.

  20. Server GIS:- The ESRI server GIS software products allow GIS and data services to be hosted in a server-based environment. The centralization of data management and application support, combined with adherence to information technology standards, makes the server GIS software products the key to broad use of geospatial technology within enterprise information systems.
  21. What is ArcSDE ? ArcSDE® is a server software product used to manage and provide access to large multiuser geographic databases stored in DBMSs. It provides a suite of services that enhances data management performance, extends the range of data types that can be stored in a DBMS, enables schema portability between DBMSs, and offers configuration flexibility. ArcSDE serves spatial data to ArcGIS Desktop (ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo), to Internet clients through ArcIMS, and to applications developed with ArcGIS Engine and ArcGIS Server. ArcSDE allows you to manage geographic information in any of four commercial databases—IBM® DB2® Universal Database, Informix® Dynamic Server, Oracle®, and Microsoft® SQL Server™.
  22. What is ArcIMS? ArcIMS is an internet-based GIS that allows you to centrally build and deliver a wide range of maps, data, and application to user in your organization as well as outside of your organization on the World Wide Web. ArcIMS includes both client and server technology.
  23. ArcGIS Server ArcGIS Server is a comprehensive platform for delivering enterprise GIS applications that support multiple users from a server-based computing environment. ArcGIS Server is a complete and integrated server-based GIS.  It comes with out-of-the-box Web mapping applications and delivers Web services that support spatial data management, spatial analysis, and 2D and 3D visualization.
  24. Embedded GIS:- ArcGIS also provides developer products that allow you to build custom desktop GIS applications or embed GIS functionality in existing applications. ArcGIS Engine:- ArcGIS Engine provides a standard framework for developers to create custom GIS and mapping applications. ArcGIS Engine is a core set of cross-platform components compatible with multiple programming languages that enables developers to rapidly build GIS solutions on ESRI’s ArcGIS platform. Developers build ArcGIS Engine applications using standard frameworks including Visual Basic®, .NET, and Java. C++, and COM.
  25. Mobile GIS:- Mobile GIS technology extends GIS beyond the office and allows organizations to make accurate business decisions and collaborate in both field and office environments. Wireless connectivity, geoservices, and Web mapping applications allow field-based professionals to complete database transactions in near real time. Mobile ArcGIS :- All ArcGIS Desktop products—ArcReader, ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo—and custom applications built with ArcGIS Engine can be used on high-end mobile systems such as laptops and tablet PCs. These solutions are for users who require rich mapping, data compilation, query, and analysis in the field.
