  1. Space

  2. What is Space? • Space is an element of art • Space is the area within an object • Space is also the area around an emphasized object • Space is the foreground, middle ground and background of a picture • Space is usually presented with other art elements, for example color, shape and emphasis

  3. What are the properties of Space? • Space can be two dimensional or three dimensional • Sometimes space can not physically be on a piece but it might seem to be • When space is bright it indicates it is positive space and when there is a gloomier darker value to the space it means the space is negative • When a sculptor makes a sculpture there would always be the element of space around and within the shape

  4. The Meditative Rose By Salvador Dali • The Meditative Rose was completed in 1958. This picture has background and foreground. The background is the mountains, the sky and the sunset. The foreground is the rose. This represents space because it emphasizes one object and everything around the object (The rose) is space. The rose is a positive shape while the background is negative space. In a sense, emphasis and space works together, so in most cases there would be both in a painting.

  5. The GyuriLohmuller Fish Painting By GyuriLohmuller. . This piecerepresents space in three ways. It has foreground, middle ground and background. The foreground is the frontal beach area. The middle ground is the fish bowl area, and the background is the city and far sky. There is emphasis on the fish bowl and the statue holding up the fishbowl.

  6. In this picture there is lots of space. All the white around the color is space. In other words the color is the foreground and the white is the background. Also this picture shows how emphasis and space goes hand-in-hand and how this picture wouldn’t have represented space as well if it didn’t have emphasis.

  7. This photo represents space because the ice cream is the foreground and the girl’s blurry face is the background. The blurry part of the background represents space really well because it doesn’t interfere with the ice cream cones. This is one way of doing space really well. It is a good way to represent space because when a picture is blurry it is a bit faded and in this example that is quite important.
