Greeter SWBAT give a reasonable explanation of what the United Nations is and the role that it plays in global issues as well as global rankings. What is the United Nations (UN)? • The United Nations was founded in 1945 with the mission to maintain world peace, develop good relations between countries, promote cooperation in solving the world’s problems, and encourage a respect for human rights. • Currently, there are 191 member countries with different social, political, and economic systems. • These countries agree to peacefully settle disputes and refrain from threatening or using force against each other. • In April of 1945, even before World War II was officially over, representatives from 50 countries met in San Francisco to create the charter for the United Nations. • Today, the UN’s headquarters are located in New York, NY.
